Every five days, the Make-a-Wish Foundation makes a dream come true for a kid in Maine. A little girl in Old Town knew what she wanted: a playground, custom made just for her.

When faced with a life threatening illness, it’s nice to have something to look forward to. Being able to have your dreams come true, that’s something you can only wish for.

“It’s hard on your heart to see what she’s going through and her family’s going through. We’re just so happy we can be here to help her.”

Four year-old Abbey Baker of Old Town simply wanted a playground. What she got was much, much more. The idea behind Abbey’s Make-a-Wish playground is to cater to her sensory needs, such as the movement on a swing.

“We’ve got a sandbox that she can play in and feel the sand. We have a slide and swing. It’s a special needs swing that will fit her for years to come. Then a really fun little garden area for her to dig around in the dirt and feel the different textures of the flowers.”

They’ve even installed a wireless sound system to play all of Abbey’s favorite hits, as well as a double-layered raised flower bed with flowers she can plant next spring.

“She’s very excited. She has a sandbox and playground at school, so she’s going to really enjoy having something at home to play with her brother and sister.”

All of the excitement comes with a little sweat and hard work. That’s something, Carol Colson couldn’t wait for.

“At Bangor Savings, we give over $1 million to the community every year and it’s just so special to be able to actually be here and get our hands dirty and do the work ourselves to help Abbey.”

Abbey even caught the eye of a former “Wish Kid” who once had a wish of her own. “It just happened to be at the right time and you know, the right moment.”

Tyler, along with other local volunteers, are part of why children continue to have hope.

“There so many people that jump in that are willing to help the community and it’s just awesome.”

“This is a great type of wish for us because we’re able to involve members of the community that have been a part of making the wish happen.”

Bangor Savings Bank was the Adopt a Wish sponsor for the playground and Lowe’s donated time and supplies…
