In the team’s Eastern Maine Class C semifinal loss to Orono, Mattanawcook Academy of Lincoln freshman standout Sydney Robertson paced the Lynx with 10 points and eight rebounds.

But the Red Riots won’t have to figure out a way to neutralize her this season because she will be playing for the Red Riots.

The 6-foot forward/center, daughter of former Mattanawcook Academy star and University of Maine starting center Curtis Robertson, has moved to Orono with her family.

Robertson played with the Red Riots during summer league basketball and had a chance to familiarize herself with her new teammates and Orono head coach Jessica Witham.

“It was the best welcoming you could ever receive,” the 15-year-old Robertson said. “It couldn’t have gone any better. It was a very good experience. I definitely learned a lot this summer. I spent a day working with coach Witham, and I learned so much it was crazy.”

Witham said there was a learning curve.

“It’s tough walking into a team with a lot of returners,” she said. “She didn’t know the plays or my terminology. She had to start from scratch.

“But she [adapted] well to the team concept, and she is a quick learner,” added Witham. “She’s a very coachable kid. She wants to learn and do well. She has the potential to be a pretty good player.”

Robertson said she is excited for the basketball season.

“It can’t come soon enough,” said Robertson, who is serving as the back-up goalkeeper for the Orono girls soccer team.

Robertson said Orono High has a lot to offer her in the way of academics and athletics, and she is looking forward to the challenge.

Her family didn’t move into their Orono home until two weeks ago.

“We had been commuting [from Lincoln] all summer,” she said.

The move had been in the works for a while.

Robertson’s father works in Old Town, and her mother, Shannon, works in Bangor, and they had been commuting from Lincoln.

“It was very hard. My [younger] brother [Connor] and I were always home alone,” said Robertson. “We didn’t have much family time.”

Robertson is joining an Orono team that went 19-2 last season and reached the Eastern Maine Class C final, where Calais upended the Red Riots 49-30.

The Red Riots graduated just three players off that team: 5-9 forward Katie Smith, 5-5 guard Elea Kass and 5-7 forward Elizabeth Hardison.

Witham said Robertson will be able to handle a number of roles.

“She’s a tall, strong girl. She will be able to fill in where we need her. If we need her to score, she can score, if we need her to block shots, she can block shots,” said Witham.

Robertson had a memorable tournament last winter.

In addition to her performance against Orono, she had scored seven fourth-quarter points and finished with six rebounds for the sixth-seeded Lynx in an upset win over No. 3 Narraguagus of Harrington 46-40 in the quarterfinals.

Robertson said she will miss her friends in Lincoln and most of them wished her luck.

But not all.

“I definitely found out who my true friends were,” she said.

Orono girls soccer, Foxcroft field hockey teams lose goalies but expect to contend

The Orono High School girls soccer team and the Foxcroft Academy field hockey squad captured Eastern Maine Class C championships in their respective sports last season. Foxcroft went on to win the state title by beating North Yarmouth Academy 1-0 in the final; Orono lost to Waynflete of Portland 3-2 in double overtime.

The teams had veteran goalies returning, but knee injuries shelved both goalies for the upcoming season.

Brianna Skolfield allowed just one goal a year ago as the Ponies went 17-0-1. But she hurt her knee playing summer basketball and has returned to Central High School in Corinth, where she spent her first two years before transferring to Foxcroft last year.

Vicki Goodwin was a two-year starter for Orono but will undergo surgery after suffering a knee injury in practice a week ago.

“She was just moving around, jogging a little to get ready to start practice, and she planted her foot and her knee popped,” Orono coach Cid Dyjak explained.

Sophomore Katelyn Richards, the back-up goalie and midfielder, will replace Goodwin. Sophomore Sydney Robertson, who transferred from Mattanawcook Academy in Lincoln, will back her up.

The Ponies have inherited a pair of players from the soccer team who will be vying for the goalkeeping job: Madison Chadbourne is a junior and Abby Simpson is a sophomore.

Dyjak and FA’s Stephanie Smith feel their teams will still contend, even though they will be inexperienced in goal.

“Katelyn has played very well in a couple of scrimmages,” Dyjak said. “Things are coming into place. She’s getting a little more confident. She’s cutting off her angles better. She still has a ways to go, but she is off to a great start.”…

Orono also has experienced top-notch talent up front, in the midfield and in the back.

The Riots went 15-2-1 last fall and are still seeking that elusive first state championship. They have played in three state finals over the past six years.

The offensive catalysts will include senior midfielder Diana Tyutyunnyk along with striker Daphne Murphy, midfielder-striker Becky Lopez-Anido, attacking midfielder Brinsley Chasse and outside midfielder Elizabeth White. Murphy, Lopez-Anido, Chasse and White are sophomores.

Senior Ally Gonyar will be a defensive midfielder. The other midfielders will include senior Bella Desisto, junior Ali Pickering and sophomore Elise Kenney. Desisto has been slowed in the early going by a back injury.

Three-year starters Lauren Stoops and Jordan Hernandez, both juniors, will headline the defense. They will be joined by junior Samantha Round and sophomore Lydia Chase.

Orono-Houlton football summary

ORONO, Maine — Friday night served as the unveiling of what the Orono High School football team hopes will be a revamped, more diversified offense.

However, facing a two-touchdown deficit at halftime, the Red Riots went back to the scheme that has been their bread and butter for many years.

Coach Bob Sinclair’s team lined up in a T formation in the second half, sparking a dominating 24 minutes that culminated in a season-opening 28-12 LTC victory over Houlton.

The Red Riots scored on their first four possessions of the second half, riding strong offensive line play and a balanced ground attack to the come-from-behind win.

“When we got our backs to the wall, we just made a decision at halftime to come out and do what we’ve always done,” Sinclair said. “The kids know how to do that.”

Orono responded after the Shiretowners made their varsity debut with a well-rounded first-half performance. The visitors rode the powerful play of halfback Jake Drew, who carried 14 times for 137 yards in the first half alone.

He finished the night with 187 yards on 22 carries and two touchdowns.

Houlton also was sparked by steady line play and a versatile, ground-oriented offense.

“The end of the first half, they had us on our heels a little bit,” Sinclair said. “They’re big kids, tough kids.”

However, Orono received the second-half spark that it needed from its offense, while the defensive unit made a couple of adjustments that enabled the Red Riots to shut down the Shires’ run game.

Orono took the second-half kickoff and quickly went 64 yards on only five plays. Sophomore halfback Matt Fowler (12 carries, 77 yards) burst up the middle for a 33-yard scoring run and Keenan Collett added the conversion rush to light the Red Riots’ collective fire and cut the deficit to 12-8.

“We were fortunate to be able to make a few things happen and I think that gave us a spark,” Sinclair said. “Once we scored that first one and the way that we did by ripping big yardage, gave the kids a lot of confidence.”

The hosts grabbed the lead for good after Houlton gave up the ball on its own 14-yard line after a bad punt snap. Tom Lucy’s 5-yard scamper on the second play made it 14-12 at the 7:58 mark.

Orono forced another punt and marched 56 yards on six plays. Lucy (8 carries, 60 yards) peeled off a tackle-breaking 26-yard run that set up Fowler’s 4-yard scoring drive. Collett’s rush made it 22-12 with 3:26 to play in the third quarter.

By that time, the Shires appeared a bit deflated. And when Mark Lucy sacked Houlton quarterback Ryan Heath and Connor McCluskey recovered the fumble only moments later, Orono was back on the attack.

The Red Riots covered the 28 yards in seven plays, with Collett capping the drive from two yards out with 11:21 remaining.

Houlton could not muster any serious threats after that.

“They did some good things, but we made some nice adjustments,” Sinclair said. “We made an adjustment at halftime where we did a few things and that kind of slowed them down.”

The Shiretowners broke a scoreless tie midway through the second quarter. They did so in somewhat bizarre fashion.

At one point during its possession, Houlton faced a third-and-39 from its own 34-yard line. However, consecutive 15-yard penalties, including a personal foul that resulted in an automatic first down, got the visitors within striking distance.

On the next play, the 13th of the seesaw drive, Drew took a toss to the left side, eluded a would-be tackler, cut back to the right and dove into the end zone while being tripped up by Coutts.

The 29-yard run made it 6-0 with 5:46 to play in the half.

Houlton scored again on its next possession, taking over at the Orono 47 after a punt. The Shires needed only four plays to score.

Again, Houlton defied the odds. Drew again took a pitch to the left and encountered a handful on blockers and onrushing potential tacklers. He muscled his way out of the scrum, chugged back toward the middle of the field, broke a tackle, then sped down the right side into the end zone.

The PAT kick was blocked, leaving Houlton on top 12-0 with 1:07 to play in the half.

Stockley’s two goals, Frederick’s defensive gem lead Orono boys past GSA

ORONO — Senior midfielder Kam Stockley scored two pretty goals for the Orono High School boys soccer team, but a timely clearance by senior right back Nathan Frederick early in the second half could have been just as important in Orono’s season-opening 3-1 victory over George Stevens Academy of Blue Hill on Saturday afternoon.

The Red Riots were leading 2-1 seven minutes into the second half when Beowulf Urban’s well-placed corner kick pinballed around in the Orono penalty area. The ball was headed toward the Orono goal as senior goalie Alik Espling tried to scramble across but Frederick was positioned well on the near post and headed it away to preserve the lead.

“Somebody headed it and it was just about to go toward the post and I headed it away,” said Frederick.

“That was key,” said GSA’s Urban.

“It was close. I thought we were going to score,” said GSA’s John Larson, who had scored a beautiful equalizer before Stockley gave Orono the lead for good with 54.1 seconds left in the half.

Stockley added an insurance goal 10 minutes after Frederick’s clearance.

Orono dominated the first half, but senior goalie Tim Cousins made a number of important saves to keep the game scoreless until there was 7:05 remaining.

That’s when Anthony Bottie whipped in a free kick from the right flank, just outside the penalty area, and the ball glanced in off a GSA defender’s head.

But the Eagles tied it off a rare first-half attack 32 seconds later.

Garrison Looke dashed down the right flank and sent a pacey cross that Larson neatly volleyed past Espling with his left foot from 12 yards out.

Both teams had glorious chances over the next six minutes.

Urban’s precise through-ball sent Taylor Astbury in alone down the right side but he dragged his 13-yarder past the far post.

Stockley then had a break-in for Orono, but Cousins came racing off his line and bravely smothered Stockley’s 8-yarder.

Stockley received another break-in opportunity off a nice through-ball from Swedish exchange student Fredrik Linden in the final minute and he converted from 11 yards out to give Orono the halftime lead.

“Their defender lost me so I kicked it ahead and I was faster than he was,” said Stockley. “The goalie came out and I slid it through him, between his arm and where the hole was.”

Orono outshot GSA 17-5 in the first half. Cousins finished with 10 saves while Espling had two.

The Eagles, who were without two starting defenders, turned in a better performance in a more evenly played second half and generated some other chances in addition to the one off Urban’s corner kick.

The highly skilled Urban set up Larson for a shot from the top of the penalty area but it sailed high midway through the half.

Thirty-four seconds later, Linden passed to Stockley for a highlight-reel goal.

“I chipped it over a defender and angled myself so I could kick it into the far corner,” said Stockley.

Espling made three saves on six shots in the second half to finish with five on 11 shots while GSA’s Jacob Reynolds made two stops on eight shots.

“We played very well,” said Orono coach Waldo Caballero, whose team had a 25-11 edge in shots at goal.

“They had an edge on us in fundamentals,” acknowledged Urban.

“We need to continue to get better,” said GSA coach Mark Ensworth.

Community Helps with Old Town Make-a-Wish

Every five days, the Make-a-Wish Foundation makes a dream come true for a kid in Maine. A little girl in Old Town knew what she wanted: a playground, custom made just for her.

When faced with a life threatening illness, it’s nice to have something to look forward to. Being able to have your dreams come true, that’s something you can only wish for.

“It’s hard on your heart to see what she’s going through and her family’s going through. We’re just so happy we can be here to help her.”

Four year-old Abbey Baker of Old Town simply wanted a playground. What she got was much, much more. The idea behind Abbey’s Make-a-Wish playground is to cater to her sensory needs, such as the movement on a swing.

“We’ve got a sandbox that she can play in and feel the sand. We have a slide and swing. It’s a special needs swing that will fit her for years to come. Then a really fun little garden area for her to dig around in the dirt and feel the different textures of the flowers.”

They’ve even installed a wireless sound system to play all of Abbey’s favorite hits, as well as a double-layered raised flower bed with flowers she can plant next spring.

“She’s very excited. She has a sandbox and playground at school, so she’s going to really enjoy having something at home to play with her brother and sister.”

All of the excitement comes with a little sweat and hard work. That’s something, Carol Colson couldn’t wait for.

“At Bangor Savings, we give over $1 million to the community every year and it’s just so special to be able to actually be here and get our hands dirty and do the work ourselves to help Abbey.”

Abbey even caught the eye of a former “Wish Kid” who once had a wish of her own. “It just happened to be at the right time and you know, the right moment.”

Tyler, along with other local volunteers, are part of why children continue to have hope.

“There so many people that jump in that are willing to help the community and it’s just awesome.”

“This is a great type of wish for us because we’re able to involve members of the community that have been a part of making the wish happen.”

Bangor Savings Bank was the Adopt a Wish sponsor for the playground and Lowe’s donated time and supplies…

ORONO, Maine — There’s plenty to work on less than two weeks into the schoolboy soccer season, but the Old Town Coyotes are riding a three-match winning streak after Tuesday afternoon’s 2-1 victory over Orono.

Senior co-captain C.J. Moody and sophomore Niko Knapp scored goals during a 3-minute, 28-second span early in the second half to provide coach Mark Graffam’s club all the offense it needed, and goalies Zac Libby and Austin Sheehan combined for 13 saves as Class B Old Town improved its record to 3-1 while sending Class C Orono to its first defeat after a 3-0 start.

“We had a good talk at half because we were pretty flat in the first half,” Moody said. “We definitely came out stronger in the second half. I feel like we played the ball better and made better passes. It was just a lot better.”

Orono did generate more serious scoring bids during the first 40 minutes to play as the dangerous combination of seniors Kam Stockley and Frederik Linden sparked the Red Riots to a 9-6 first-half shots advantage.

Old Town may have had the best early bid, though, as Drew Coulombe beat Orono goalie Alik Espling to a loose ball near the 18-yard line and got past him, only to be denied via a sliding tackle by Red Riots’ freshman Joseph Astumian.

Old Town appeared more energized to start the second half, and was rewarded 6:28 into the period when Coulombe lofted the ball ahead to Moody, who tipped it past Espling before scoring into the open net.

“(Coulombe) gave me a nice chip ball over the defender and I kicked it by the goalie and the goalie deflected it but just before it went out I kicked it in,” Moody said.

A similar chip, this time by Chad Bartlett, set up Knapp’s goal with 30:05 left in the second half. Knapp, stationed 10 yards out from the right goal post, headed the pass toward the net and it deflected off an Orono player into the goal for what turned out to be a valuable insurance goal.

Orono soon grew more aggressive on offense and nearly scored moments later, only to have Old Town defender Nick Sinclair clear away a ball bound for the back of the net.

Coach Waldo Caballero’s Red Riots broke through with 11:50 remaining when Stockley gained possession outside the 18-yard line, jumped between two defenders while pushing the ball ahead and then tipped it past Libby and into the net an instant before the two collided.

Libby was injured on the play and left the game, but sophomore Austin Sheehan came on to make four saves and preserve the lead.

Orono finished with a 20-16 edge in shots, with Libby adding nine saves for Old Town while Espling had eight stops for the Red Riots.

Old Town is now idle until facing Caribou, John Bapst of Bangor and Presque Isle within a five-day span beginning next Tuesday.

“We’re still trying to find our offense,” Graffam said. “I’m not totally happy with the way some of the offensive movement is going but we’ve got three big games next week and hopefully we’ll have some time this week to work on some things and get ready.”

ORONO, Maine — Five former standout student-athletes will become the newest members of the Orono High School Athletic Hall of Fame on Friday night during halftime of the Red Riots’ homecoming football game against Stearns of Millinocket.

Joe Trefethen, Casey Cobb, Sonny LeClair, Diane LeClair Vinal and Jim Willard will become the seventh class inducted into the school’s hall.

Trefethen (1985) was a four-time letterwinner and a two-time first-team All-LTC honoree in football who was instrumental in leading the Red Riots to a 9-0 regular season record and a state Class B runner-up finish in 1984.

Trefethen went on to compete in football and track at the University of Maine and was named UMaine’s 1986 Rookie of the Year.

Trefethen also starred in track and field at Orono and remains the school record holder in the shot put for indoor and outdoor track. He won state championships in that event five times and also was the 1985 state titlist in the 200-meter dash.

Trefethen now lives in Bow, New Hampshire, and is general Manager of Palmer Gas/Ermer Oil Company.

Cobb (1985) quarterbacked the Red Riots’ football team in 1983 and 1984, leading them to LTC North Division titles. He was named All-LTC and All-State in 1984.

Cobb captained both the basketball and baseball teams as a senior and was an All-PVC shortstop in 1984 and 1985.

He graduated among the top 10 in his class and also was a three-year class president as well as president of the National Honor Society chapter before going on to Harvard University where he was a two-year starter at second base.

Cobb went on to serve as running backs coach for the 1989 Yankee Conference-winning University of Maine football team. He later earned his doctorate from Arizona State University and currently is associate dean of the University of Connecticut’s Neag School of Education. He resides in Mansfield, Connecticut.

LeClair (1980) was a four-year letterwinner in football who anchored the offensive and defensive lines for three straight undefeated and state championship teams, including the 1979 squad that had six future Division I college team captains on the roster.

LeClair was a three-time All-LTC first-team selection.

He began throwing the shot put as a junior and became the first schoolboy thrower in Eastern Maine to eclipse the 50-foot mark. During his senior year, he also set the school record in the discus before going on to compete in the shot put, discus and hammer at the University of Maine.

LeClair later coached the throwers on the Orono track team for three years.

In the winter of his senior year, LeClair became what many believe to be the first male stunt leader for the basketball cheering squad, and he recruited other football players to assist the cheerleaders at basketball games.

LeClair now lives in Orrington and is owner of Quality Jewelers in Bangor and co-owner of the city’s Seasons sports bar and restaurant.

Leclair Vinal (1983), Sonny LeClair’s sister, earned 11 letters in field hockey, indoor and outdoor track and also managed the girls basketball team for three years.

She remains the school record holder in the shot put, discus, and javelin and also is the Class C outdoor track state record holder in the shot put with a throw of 40-8 set in 1983 as well as the Penobscot Valley Conference record holder in the shot put and discus.

The Red Riots won state championships in both indoor and outdoor track during each of her four years at Orono.

LeClair went on to serve as Orono’s head coach for four years in indoor and outdoor track and later held assistant coaching positions at John Bapst High School and Hampden Academy.

She now lives in Orono and works at the Hilton Garden Inn as well as the United Methodist Church.

Willard (1963) played football, basketball and tennis at Orono.

In football he played tackle for teams that won three straight Little Eight Conference titles. Willard was a team captain and all-conference first-team choice as a senior both as a tackle and as placekicker.

He played on three Eastern Maine championship basketball teams with two of those clubs winning state titles.

While tennis was not yet an established team sport during Willard’s time at Orono, he competed in the state singles tournament as a junior and senior and reached the semifinals each year.

Willard graduated from the University of Maine and eventually devoted his life to education, teaching in East Millinocket for 30 years as well as at Katahdin High School in Stacyville for 12 years. He also taught briefly in Quito, Ecuador.
